How to view your Mac’s remaining storage space

0

Many of us live and breathe on our Macs.

Work, entertainment and a lot of memories are often stored on the device, but do you know how much room you’ve got left to play with?

If you don’t, then it might be time to have a look. So here’s a quick guide to checking your remaining storage space.

It’s worth being aware of how much space you have remaining because Apple have actually decreased the space available on new Macs by introducing flash based storage.

If you are running low on space, your Mac will provide you with a warning. But you should leave your device a little room to breathe (at least 10% of free space at all times) as Macs need a buffer of unused storage to perform tasks such as running apps.

One great benefit of checking before you run out, is the fact that you’ll be able to understand what’s using up most of the space and take actions to free it up. E.g. if you have tonnes of photos, why not check out our guide to Google Photos? A nifty photo gallery app which gives you unlimited free storage and automatic downloads.

So stay ahead of the game and keep on top of the available space on your Mac. You can check what’s left using this simple process:

Open Menu -> Click About This Mac -> Click Storage -> *View remaining storage*

From here you can evaluate what is taking up all the space on your Mac and try to alleviate some of the storage space. Perhaps, you can do so by utilising storage apps or external storage devices.

This process can help protect and preserve your Mac. If you treat the device well, by following basic maintenance techniques, you will find it will run and last you a lot longer.
