Wii U – Angry Nerd’s Having An Adventure?

0

We’ve heard of movie franchises being turned into video games, and vice versa, but a game based on an internet comedy series? Really?! Angry Video Game Nerd Adventures (or AVGNA for short) on the Wii U is based on Angry Video Game Nerd, a comedy show that stars James Rolfe – famous for his unusual, but often hilarious, reviews of classic video games. AVGNA has just been released on the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS, and is certainly an exhilarating (if at times perplexing) play.

WHAT’S IT ABOUT?

Angry Video Game Nerd Adventures was first released back in 2013 on Steam. The game follows the Nerd as he tries to rescue his friends who have been sucked into his TV. The premise is odd, but surprisingly it works. There’s a whole load of challenges to complete, including fighting off zombies, and coming across several characters that are based on pop culture icons (think Navi from The Legend of Zelda, Freddy Krueger, and many more). It’s this weird combination of familiar characters, comedy, and surrealism that makes Angry Video Game Nerd Adventures such an enjoyable play. There are tutorials along the way which explain your challenges, and you’ll often have to reply on your NES Zapper – which serves as your weapon in the game.

HOW TO PLAY

If you’re not familiar with AVGNA on Steam, expect retro graphics and sound effects. There are several characters you’ll meet on your travels, and you will need to work your way through ten different rounds with power ups, a 2D platform, and several challenges.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Although AVDNA doesn’t really add anything new to gaming, it’s certainly fun. It’s a pastiche of all of those iconic NES games that you used to play, and if you’re a fan of the web series, you’ll definitely enjoy this. There’s plenty of toilet humor, and the game frequently lampoons some of the most famous characters in the movie and gaming genres.
